Most people think of engine remapping when they want better performance, but the gearbox plays an equally important role in how your vehicle feels to drive. An automatic gearbox that shifts too late, hesitates on downshifts, or feels sluggish off the line can undermine even the best engine tune.
Modern automatic gearboxes are controlled by a Transmission Control Unit (TCU) that determines when to shift, how fast to shift, and how the torque converter locks up. Factory settings are conservative, designed for comfort over responsiveness. A gearbox tune recalibrates the TCU to deliver faster, crisper gear changes that match the way you actually drive.
If you have already had an engine remap, a gearbox tune is the natural next step. The extra power from an engine remap changes the torque curve, but the TCU is still calibrated for the original power output. Aligning the two means the full drivetrain works together seamlessly.

Frequently Asked Questions
We tune most modern automatic transmissions including conventional torque converter autos, dual-clutch gearboxes (DSG, DCT, PDK, S-Tronic) and some CVT transmissions. The gearbox must have its own Transmission Control Unit (TCU) for us to recalibrate it. Most vehicles from 2008 onwards are eligible.
We recalibrate the TCU software to optimise shift points, shift speed, torque converter lockup behaviour, and how the gearbox responds to throttle input. The result is faster, smoother gear changes and a gearbox that feels more responsive to your driving style.
We strongly recommend it. If you have a performance remap, your engine is producing more torque than the TCU was originally calibrated for. A gearbox tune ensures the transmission can handle the extra torque properly and shift at the optimal points for the new power curve. It makes the whole drivetrain work together as intended.
Our gearbox tunes use Viezu calibration files that are developed within the safe operating limits of your transmission. We are not increasing the torque capacity of the gearbox itself - we are optimising how the TCU manages gear changes to deliver a better driving experience.
TCU recalibration typically takes 1-2 hours. If done alongside an engine remap, we can usually complete both in a single session of 2-3 hours. We come to you across Manchester, so there is no need to visit a garage.
